When adding procedures in the CUSP Sharing site, the contributing institution must select the procedure's procedure type by selecting its category, grouping and topic.
Procedures can be searched by procedure type (category) using the "Procedure Type" drop-down menu above the Procedures list. The "Search" open text box will search for any groupings and topics that match the searched term. For additional information about searching procedures, see How do I search for procedures?.
Procedure Type Categories:
- Antibody Production—This is organized by polyclonal (immunization with antigen), monoclonal (ascites or hybridoma formation), or other.
- Behavioral Testing—This is organized based on types of stimuli and then the specific tests, so to search for the category of “Stress tests”, you might be better off choosing “sleep deprivation” or “forced swim” or “startle” or “restraint” since they come in so many flavors.
- Blood and Sample Collection—Blood collection is organized by route and sample collection is organized by method of sampling (e.g., lavage). In your procedure, you should indicate whether animals will be anesthetized prior to collection.
- Capture and Trapping—This is organized by method of capture or trapping.
- Diet Modification—This does not include addition of drugs or antibiotics to the diet, which would be considered a Substance Administration procedure.
- Euthanasia—This is organized by the route of administration, such as inhaled, non-inhaled, perfusion, physical methods.
- Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine—This is primarily for atypical species (e.g., cephalopods, ferrets) or should include unusual types of housing, welfare issues, and clinical care of animals in the lab or in the field. Please describe any restraint techniques within the procedure.
- Identification and Genotyping—The identification section can include methods of tagging, tattooing, or otherwise identifying individual animals. The genotyping section would include the removal of tissue for the purposes of genotyping. Please indicate whether animals will be anesthetized for any procedures.
- Imaging and Irradiation—This is organized by the type of imaging (e.g., MRI, CAT scan, videotaping, etc.) or irradiation. Provide a description of the imaging procedure or irradiation procedure, including the type of machine used (if one is used), length of time the animal is in the machine or undergoing the imaging, amount of irradiation (if relevant), how the animal will be restrained and whether anesthesia will be used.
- Induction of Illness—This is organized with a systems approach (e.g., neurological, renal, dermatologic, etc.), then by disease names or types of injury, then finally, by the model name or procedure type used to induce the disease.
- Other Non-Surgical—This is organized by sensory or organ system, followed by the purpose of the procedure, such as “Ocular, measurement” or “Oral, maintenance” or “Neurologic, Recording/Stimulation.”
- Substance Administration—This is organized by the route of administration, then by location or type of administration (e.g., inhalation, cigarette smoke chamber).
- Surgery—This is organized by system, organ or tissue type, and then surgical procedure name, with removal of any organ or tissue using the suffix ‘ectomy.’ E.g., adrenalectomy, ovariectomy, laminectomy, and the suffix ‘otomy.’ to refer to making an incision or cutting into. E.g., craniotomy, sternotomy, tracheotomy.
Category Groupings and Topics:
Additionally, each procedure type category is subcategorized into different groupings and topics. For example, a Diet Modification procedure must then be subcategorized into one of the following groupings:
- Food Item(s) Addition
- Grind Modification
- Nutrient Modification
- Other Ingredient(s))
If Nutrient Modification is selected, one of the following topics must then be added:
- Amino Acid
- Calorie
- Carbohydrate
- Enzyme
- Fat
- Fatty Acid
- Fiber
- Mineral
- Protein
- Vitamin
