How do I create a child procedure? (Institutional Representatives Only)

Created by Help Desk Team, Modified on Fri, 24 Jan at 10:30 AM by Help Desk Team

Review the Guidance on Parent Procedures, Child Procedures, and Endorsements prior to adding procedures to the CUSP site.

If your institution uses a very similar procedure to an already-listed parent procedure for a listed species, but the steps, dosages, timing, or other information vary, create a new child (variation) of the procedure under the already-listed (parent) procedure.

Note: It is suggested to have information prepared in advance so that the procedure will be able to be published within 24 hours of creation, if possible. This helps to prevent duplicated procedures in the system (e.g., someone publishes a procedure while yours was in draft). If you save a draft and return to it at a later time (e.g. a few hours), double check the procedures list to confirm that you're not duplicating.

  1. Locate the ID of the procedure from which you will create a child - the procedure's ID is displayed in two places:
    1. On the main procedure's page list of procedures in a shaded box
Image of Procedure ID on Procedures page
    2. Within the open procedure (see View/Read a Procedure for additional instructions, if needed)

  2. Click on the Representative link at the top of the site and select Procedures to create a child procedure.

  3. Click the Create Procedure button or link.Image of Create Procedure button
  4. In the Create A Child Procedure section,
    1. Enter the procedure ID you located in the steps above
    2. Click on the magnifying glass lookup icon to connect the child procedure to the identified parent
    3. Click SAVE

  5. A pop-up message indicating that the child is linked is returned. Click OK or CLOSE to close the message.

  6. To edit and publish the newly created child procedure, open its draft and publish using the following instructions online at Publish a Draft Procedure, noting that:
    1. The species is not editable (because it must be the same as the species on the parent protocol to be considered a child).
    2. Although the procedure title is editable, you should not delete the (Child Procedure) appendage (this helps to identify it within the main procedures list as a child procedure).
